The Total Office staff always starts a project by placing the people who will use the space at the heart of their design.
They studied how GOAL Academy’s teachers and students worked together. They watched for both structured activities and spontaneous interactions, moments of collaboration and opportunities for connections.
Keeping the young target audience in mind, they designed intimate gathering spots with bold colors that could withstand heavy usage, where teachers and students could conduct small group work, one-on-one tutoring, partner study or solo study. The designers measured and developed a floor plan for each site, and then produced extensive renderings to help the GOAL Academy staff visualize the potential.
Since each GOAL Academy location might be set in a strip mall, a renovated building or a mall space, each came with its own unique opportunities and limitations. Site sizes ranged from 1000 to 18,000 square feet. Total Office selected flexible furniture solutions from a variety of sources that could be easily reconfigured to accommodate evolving needs and growing demand.
As the creative process progressed, a higher order need surfaced. Together, Total Office and GOAL Academy realized that many of the students lived in unsafe environments. The teams felt the need to create safe havens for these at-risk students who were choosing to better their lives.
Total Office helped GOAL Academy see that their environment could be leveraged to accomplish so much more. They then took the project from design to procurement to installation—on time and on budget.
